It is important for students to understand that the place-value relationships apply to decimals as well as whole numbers. That is, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1 10

These procedures are similar to those for whole numbers. One difference, however, is that when rounding decimals, the digit to the right of the rounding digit’s place is dropped after the rounding is completed, whereas with whole numbers, it is changed to a zero.
