Walter lee younger character analysis essay

Walter Lee Younger is a middle-aged, African-American male who works as a chauffeur. He had been doing so for many years and was not very fond of it. He lived in a very small home with a crowded amount of people and was also tired of that. “ Mama- I don’t need no nagging at me today”.

Mother Lena Younger and her children reside in a cramped apartment in a poverty-stricken district in Chicago. Her grown-up children include Water Lee and Beneatha. The life insurance that matured following the death of Lena’s husband mentality and character.

Walter’s drastic character development in the final scenes demonstrates a newfound maturity and acceptance. In the words of Lena, Walter “finally [came] into his manhood.”. Despite the harsh and difficult circumstances Walter faces throughout the play, he emerges as the new patriarch of the Younger family.

Beneatha's clear superior intelligence level over Walter is a representation of the higher class African Americans looking over struggling lower economic African American class. The author understood that in this time of Civil Rights movements it was a constant battle not only between races but social classes as well.
